RECORDS were broken yesterday when the Hartlepool Mail gave away 500 Warburtons Hot Cross Bun loaves – in under an hour.

People were queuing 10 deep at one point with copies of the paper to qualify for a free loaf.

The special reader offer was on only while stocks lasted – and that wasn't very long.

A spokesman for the bakers said: "It clearly is a 'hot' product in Hartlepool, we've never seen 500 loaves disappear so quickly."
