A MAN and his dog escaped injury when they fled a house fire.
The blaze took hold in Bourne Street, Easington Colliery, when rubbish in a coalhouse caught fire.

The occupant, a man in his late 20s, was asleep at the time and woke to smell smoke before fleeing with his Rottweiler dog.

Two crews from Peterlee Fire Station spent half an hour at the scene.

Crew manager Adrian Emberson said: "It was the rapid intervention of the fire service that stopped it spreading to the house, but the house suffered smoke damage."

The cause of the fire, which started around 2.20am today, is unknown.
