MORE than 1,000 new jobs could be created after the Government gave the go-ahead for the construction of a new green power station.
The Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (BERR) gave the OK for a gas-fired plant to be built on a 40-acre site at Seal Sands, on the outskirts of Hartlepool.

Stockton Borough Council gave its approval last April. The announcement from the Government allows work to begin

Thor Cogeneration, the firm behind the new plant, says it could be operational by 2012.

Company director Martin Green said: "We welcome the decision.

"We will now be finalising the financial and contractual arrangements for the project.

"It is expected that land preparation will commence very soon with the full construction commencing in 2009, and power being supplied into the grid in the early part of 2012."

The project will create up to 1,000 jobs during construction and a further 60 for operations.

The venture will use the very latest technology to achieve highly efficient, reliable and clean power and heat generation.
