THE parents of tragic Hartlepool United ace Michael Maidens have demanded some answers after it emerged the police probe into their son's death has closed.
Promising midfielder Michael was killed when the car he was a passenger in smashed into a metal post at the Greystones roundabout on the A174, on the outskirts of Middlesbrough, in October last year.

Family still coming to terms with death >>

Michael, 20, was declared dead at the scene and an investigation into what caused the accident was immediately launched.

But 13 months on, Michael's parents Doug and Heather have been told by the Crown Prosecution Service that no charges will be taken against anyone involved in the horror smash.

Investigations found no fault with the way the car was being driven.
The Vauxhall Corsa that was carrying Michael had had some mechanical work done on it on the day of the accident – but there was no evidence that this contributed to the crash.

Doug, 55, who runs the family plumbing business in Saltburn, is angered by the news and says he cannot understand why, after such a long investigation, he is still left wondering what led to his son's death.

He said: "This has gone on for 13 months and yet we are still left wondering what happened on that Friday night in that car.

"No action has been taken against the driver of the car, they have carried out extensive tests on the car to see if mechanical failure was to blame and they have spoken to people who were in or around the scene of the accident at the time.

"There is something just not right about this. We have seen accidents since our Mike's where the investigations have been done and dusted.
Yet this one has dragged on without what we would class as a satisfactory conclusion."

Mr Maidens attended the opening of his son's inquest at Teesside Magistrates Court two weeks after the tragedy and the full inquest will now take place on a date to be fixed.

Michael's mum Heather, 54, added: "Our first involvement with the police came almost straight away after the accident and we were told the investigation would be carried out.

"We just left people to get on with their jobs, whether it was the police, the Crown Prosecution Service or the people investigating the accident.

"When we heard that the investigation had closed, we just felt numb. We are angry at the system and after all the meetings and letters we still don't know how we lost our Mike."

A spokeswoman for Cleveland Police said: "A very lengthy and detailed investigation into the cause of the collision was carried out by officers from Cleveland Police's Road Policing Unit.

"This included an attempted reconstruction of the collision by the Transport Research Laboratory, using an almost identical vehicle.

"After consulting with the CPS throughout the investigation, it was decided that there was insufficient evidence for a prosecution."
