A PUB had to be evacuated after a fuse box started smouldering causing it to fill with smoke.

The landlady of the Victoria Inn, in Front Street, Wingate, was taken to hospital as a precaution for smoke inhalation after the incident on Saturday afternoon.

Fire crews from Peterlee Fire Station were called to the two-storey detached pub at 3pm and the building, which had a handful of customers inside, was evacuated.

A fire spokesman said: "If it had been another 10 to 15 minutes then the fire would have spread and it could have been more serious but we caught it early.

"The landlady was taken to hospital by ambulance as a precaution.

"We believe the cause to be a faulty switch."

Nobody else was injured in the incident.
