A ROYAL visitor was given a warm welcome and a birthday present at an award wining electronics plant.
The Duke of Kent took a tour of TRW Systems Limited, North West Industrial Estate, Peterlee, after the firm won a prestigious Queen's award.

The factory, which makes electronic safety devices for cars, was given the award for Enterprise in International Trade earlier this year.

The factory employs more than 800 staff and the whole of yesterday's shift gathered in the canteen as the Duke unveiled a plaque to commemorate his visit and the award.

The visit saw plant manager Phill Pearce present the Duke, who celebrates his 73rd birthday tomorrow, with a surprise gift.

The Royal visitor, who is the Queen's cousin, was delighted with by the crystal decanter and glass set given to him by the company.

He said: "It is exciting to visit a company that has won one of the Queen's awards.

"There is great competition for these awards.

"There are 2,000 applicants every year and perhaps one in 10 get through.

"Companies that have the Queen's award really do represent the cream of business."

With 2007 sales of £8.5bn, TRW Automotive is among the world's leading automotive suppliers.

In the last three years the Peterlee plant has increased exports by 77 per cent, trading with Europe, North America, Japan, China, India and South Korea.

The Duke of Kent was taken on a tour of the factory floor where he spoke to staff and showed interest in production techniques.

Mr Pearce said he was impressed with the Duke's knowledge of safety systems.

The plant manager met the Duke when he went to Buckingham Palace in July to collect the award from the Queen on behalf of the factory.

He said: "It was an incredible day and an honour to represent my team here at TRW."
