A GATEWAY into a historic part of town has been adorned with a new landmark designed to capture the area's maritime heritage.
The 5ft A-frame bell buoy has been installed in flowerbeds at the junction of West View Road and Cleveland Road, on the way to Hartlepool's Headland.

Former councillor John Cambridge arranged for the buoy to be installed.

The feature dates from 1925 and was used in the channel just off the Headland.

Mr Cambridge featured in the Mail in April last year, when he had two 5ft anchors installed at the Mountbatten Close and West View Road entrances to the Central Estate.

He said: "This is yet another landmark to commemorate the heritage of old Hartlepool and I'm proud to be able to mark it in this way.

"It looks really well. I'm pleased with it. It's really eye-catching on the way into the Headland and it's another way of fetching back our heritage.

"We are now going to get more flowers put into the flowerbed to surround it."

Mr Cambridge is also hoping to install two coble boats on the Headland – in Northgate and the Croft Gardens – in the coming weeks.
