The sunflowers can be seen in the fields at Naisberry Farm, in Worset Lane, Elwick, on the outskirts of Hartlepool.
Farmer Tom Bird planted the seeds as an experiment earlier this year and he is hoping to harvest the crop and sell the seeds as bird feed.
If the harvest of the seven hectare crop is successful, then the colourful sight could become an annual event in Hartlepool.
S N Bird and Son farms wheat and oil seed rape at the site, but for the past couple of years they have also been producing wild bird seed mix.
The aim is to harvest the sunflowers and use the seeds for the bird mix, which will be sold at the farm and in local pet shops from autumn.
Mr Bird, who lives with wife Beryl and their three children, said: "Every day people are stopping to take pictures of the crop and it is great to see people taking an interest.
"We are hoping for a warm Indian summer so we can harvest the crop and then sell the mix from the farm and at local pet shops."
