A SCIENCE teacher who went Stateside has scooped a prestigious award at the home of the American President.
Former Hartlepool woman Susan Bigge, 34, was presented with the Presidential Award for excellence in science teaching at the White House earlier this month.
And she believes it is her hometown's teachers she has to thank for helping her achieve such success.
Susan, who grew up in the Owton Manor area of Hartlepool and whose maiden name is Skirving, moved to America in 1998, to teach physics at a high school in Tulsa.
She went to Owton Manor Primary School, Brierton and Hartlepool Sixth Form College before going on to study at Oxford University, and she taught in Newcastle before moving to Oklahoma 10 years ago.
Susan, who is married to Ash Bigge, 40, an oil industry worker, said: "I was nominated for the award by the science curriculum supervisor for Tulsa Public Schools. For the application process I had to submit a video of my teaching and a written response to questions about the video and my views on science education.
"The application was reviewed at the state level and I was named one of three finalists for science in Oklahoma.
"The national committee of leaders in science and science education reviewed my application and selected me."
Susan was able to visit the White House during a recognition week in which she joined other winners in Washington. She added: "I have had many exemplary teachers who deserve to be part of the award and that is
why I am so pleased I am able to thank them through the Mail.
"I am thrilled to get the award. The recognition week was wonderful with many unique opportunities, touring the White House, dinner at the State Department and meeting with leaders in science education, senators and congressmen."
Each award winner received a $10,000 educational grant, and an all-expenses paid trip for two to Washington DC to accept the certificate.
