The teenager was driving a Peugeot 106 just before midnight when he collided with a Vauxhall combo security van.

He was the only occupant of the vehicle.

Fire crews and paramedics rushed to the scene but efforts to revive him failed. He was declared dead at the scene.

The accident happened in Tees Road outside the Mayfair Centre in Seaton Carew, around 11.55pm yesterday.

Watch manager Andy Robinson, from Stranton Fire Station, said: "When we got there the Peugeot was on its roof.

"The driver was removed from the vehicle. Together with paramedics we worked on him for 15 minutes until he was pronounced dead."

Cleveland Police said the 40-year-old man who was driving the security van is from County Durham.

He was given oxygen at the scene and taken to the University Hospital of North Tees Hospital but later released.

Mr Robinson added: "He was severely shaken up."

Police said the road was closed until 4.30am and a full investigation into the incident is now underway.

Offices are appealing for witnesses to the incident to contact PC Andrew Anderson on (01642) 301552.
