TRIBUTES have been paid to a tireless community worker after her death at the age of 80.
Hartlepool woman Doreen Stonehouse was well known in Hartlepool for her voluntary sector and church activities.
Her devotion was such that she even picked up a lifetime service award last year in recognition for her work.
Among the organisations she worked for were the Skillshare training organisation, Settlement Furniture Services and the West View Advice and Resource Centre
Les Nevin, of Settlement Furniture Services, said today: "Doreen's real gift was her ability to befriend people from all walks of life. How she enjoyed meeting people and listening to their stories!"
Doreen, who died at her home in the King Oswy area of town, was the life president and chairman of Skillshare.
She was renowned for her professionalism and ability to understand a balance sheet with a swift glance.
Margaret Renn, the vice chairman of Skillshare, said: "Doreen aimed to reduce the time spent conducting AGM business and her record for the shortest AGM was an incredible 12 minutes. Each year she relished the challenge of reducing this further."
"Doreen didn't suffer fools gladly but she was incredibly tolerant and understanding, always willing to be influenced by other points of view. Once she had decided on the best course of action, however, her dogged determination and ability to defend her own corner often belied her gentle nature and slight frame."
Due to her Christian values, Doreen was passionate about caring for others and found herself drawn to voluntary groups.
These included Settlement Furniture Services, which distributes quality and affordable furniture.
As a member of the Christian Council, she was also instrumental in the setting up of the advice and resource centre.
Last year Doreen was awarded the Hartlepool Volunteer Bureau's Lifetime Service Award in recognition for being one of the town's longest serving and most passionate volunteers.
"Staff and volunteers from her many projects will fondly remember a dignified and selfless lady who was always on hand with a kind or supportive word, sometimes even a small gift or some sound advice.
"Her passing leaves a huge void in Hartlepool's voluntary sector."
Her funeral will take place at Holy Trinity Church, in Davison Drive, on Monday, November 12, at 2.15pm.
