HUNDREDS of people turned out and enjoyed a historic village feast celebration with fancy dress, music, dance and so much more.
And one of the most popular parts of the day at Greatham Village Feast was the fancy dress show which saw dozens of characters, including Disney film favourites Shrek, Princess Fiona, Puss in Boots and a real-life donkey, the Three Little Pigs, The Smurfs and four-year-old Ava Rowley as a cute little Snow White.
The parade set off from the Smiths Arms pub, at the top of the High Street, at 1pm and made its way down to The Green where the rest of the festivities took place on Saturday.
Crowds of people enjoyed children’s rides, a huge bouncy slide, and shuggy-boats, and singing performances from girl-group The Peppermints.
They also took pleasure in pelting wet sponges off members of the village’s committee-men in the stocks.
There was hot and cold food on offer, and jewellery, plants, pottery and balloon stalls, and the chance to win prizes on tombola and raffles.
Later in the afternoon, around 3.30pm, spectators made a huge circle on the grass and welcomed excellent dance routines from Ruff Diamondz and pupils from Val Armstrong School of Dance, which received rapturous applause.
And the celebrations went on into the night when villagers brought their gazebos and picnic rugs onto The Green to watch top-notch band The Hobbies perform a string of well-known hits and had spectators rocking and rolling on the grass.
Yesterday’s family event – in which races and other contests had been organised – was cancelled due to the weather and will be rescheduled later in the summer.
