Have your say

MEMBERS of a diabetes support group proved a little of what you fancy does you good when they enjoyed their annual festive meal.

Hartlepool Diabetes Group met for their Christmas meal at The Schooner, in Seaton Carew.

Around 18 members gathered for the tasty three-course meal, which included a carvery, starters and dessert.

The group’s facilitator, Hayley Hakansson, who has been a member since she was diagnosed with the condition three-and-a-half years ago, said: “We all had a really good time.
“It’s an annual thing, we get everyone together and have a meal and group leaders, including myself, Denise O’Rourke and David Cooper, were presented with gift vouchers.

“Having diabetes didn’t affect our enjoyment of the meal You shouldn’t let diabetes rule your life. Eat what you want, within reason.

“I always say a little bit of what you fancy does you good.”

The group also had a festive gathering at its usual meeting place, Hartlepool Central Library, last week, where mince pies and coffee were on offer, and a further Christmas meeting is planned for this Friday at the York Road-based library, between 10am and noon and all are welcome.

Hayley said: “I’d like to wish all our members a Merry Christmas and a very happy new year.”

The group, which is also open to people from East Durham, offers a support network and advice with a range of issues, both health and non-health related.

Health practitioners, including doctors, nurses and dieticians attend the meetings and give talks, as well as company officials with updates on all the latest health equipment.

The group’s meetings take place on alternate Fridays, with the next ones after Christmas running on January 4, January 18, February 1 and February 15.
