Motorists faced delays on the A19 as police dealt with a string of accidents today.
Durham Constabulary dealt with accidents on both the north and southbound carriageways close to Peterlee around 8am.
North East Ambulance Service staff attended and treated people at the roadside but no-one required hospital treatment.
A witness described a vehicle on the central reservation of the northbound carriageway.
"It was upright, but it looked as though it had been crushed," she said.
A police spokeswoman said the northbound collision had involved two vehicles, while three were involved in the accident on the southbound carriageway.
No-one was hurt.
One casualty was taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital after a collision between a van and a car on the A19 at its junction with the A1231 at Washington around 9am.
Firecrews from Marley Park and Farringdon fire stations attended the scene.
All incidents have now been cleared.
