All set for carnival

A PACKED programme for the annual Hartlepool carnival has been confirmed with the fun and games set to get under way next week.

After months of hard work and preparation, the carnival committee has revealed all of the popular events are back this year – and now it is appealing to people to turn out in force.

The Miss Carnival and Carnival Princess contests will return along with the town fair and family fun day.

Children can join in with the fun at treasure digs, sandcastle competitions and rising stars talent contests while the classic nutty slack race will take place on the final day of the carnival along with the parade.

The 10-strong carnival committee team have been hard at work organising the event since last year’s carnival.

It is pleased to have a packed programme planned for this year’s carnival – and is hoping the weather brightens up for the various outdoor activities.

A committee spokesman told the Mail: “The programme is looking good.

“The feedback we have had from people has been excellent and now we are all counting down the days until the activities get under way.”

Some carnival activities actually started last month with the heats of the Hartlepool’s Got Talent competition.

The grand final will take place at the Borough Hall, on the Headland, on Friday, July 20 along with the Miss Carnival contest.

The Carnival Princess competition will then be held on Monday, July 23 at Headland Social Club, in Throston Street before the ever-popular opening of the town fair on Thursday, August 2.

Committee members will be handing out free vouchers for the rides to children with special needs on the fairground from 11.30am-1.30pm.

Stephen Akers-Belcher, chair of Hartlepool Borough Council, will then open the fair alongside the carnival king and queen at 2pm.

Hartlepool Hawks Cheerleading team and the Teesside Twirlers will be performing on the day.

The committee spokesman added: “We have held various meetings and listened to what people have said and what events they want.

“Hopefully we have put a programme together which everyone will enjoy.”

The carnival committee are always on the lookout for sponsorship, donations or volunteers.
