A GREAT-GREAT-GRANDMOTHER with a “strong heart” has reached another milestone birthday.
Bella Lee turns 103 today after overcoming a string of setbacks.
Bella, the head of five generations, was treated to a party yesterday at Peterlee Care Home, in Westcott Road, where she lives.
According to her family, Bella has reached the grand old age as she is a “battler” and has a “strong heart”.
Daughter Isabella Bostock, 74, said Bella fell out of bed about eight years ago at her previous care home and doctors rang Isabella to say her heart was weak.
But Bella, who has lost her sight, overcame the odds and enjoyed her birthday celebrations.
Mum-of-six Isabella, who lives in Haswell, said: “Last year she had pleurisy, she had never had it before, but she is still here. She’s got a strong heart.”
Bella (nee Gray) was born on May 31, 1911, in Murton and worked in greenhouses ran by her father.
She moved to Haswell when she married Henry Lee, and had six children, the late Henry, who passed away around 14 years ago and would have now been 80, Robert, who is now 78 and lives in Hartlepool, Shirley Thompson, 76, of Murton, Isabella, Irene Taylor, 70, of Haswell and Ruth Smith, 68, of Peterlee.
