A GOLF club manager has blasted “mindless” yobs who went on a 4x4 wrecking spree, tearing up several greens and rendering them unusable for weeks.
The hooligans managed to get on to the Hartlepool Golf Club course, off Speeding Drive, in the town’s King Oswy area, and churned up the picture-perfect grass on the 16th green, the 16th fairway and the 17th tee.
Club bosses believe the yobs got on to the site through land at the old Steetley site, some time between Friday night and Saturday morning.
The damage – which will cost at least £1,000 to repair and leave that section of the course unusable for at least two-and-a-half months – was discovered when staff turned up to check the course on Saturday morning.
Today, club manager Graham Laidlaw, condemned the yobs’ behaviour.
He said: “It’s just mindless really.
“I just don’t know what the method is in their madness and why they feel they have to do this.
“Fortunately our members are quite understanding.
“It’s not the first time it’s happened either. It’s been done on purpose there’s no doubt about that and I don’t think it’s just a quad bike either, the tracks are too deep for that.
“We think it’s been a Range Rover or a 4x4 of some description.”
Graham reported the incident to police who have now launched an investigation into the incident.
A spokeswoman for for Cleveland Police said: “This has caused a great deal of damage and inconvenience to the club which will cost a lot of money to put right.
“Anyone who has information on who is responsible for this mindless criminal damage should contact Hartlepool Police on (01642) 302110 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.”
