The RSPCA is recruiting runners to take part in the world's biggest half marathon.

This year's Great North Run takes place on Sunday, September 11, and the RSPCA has charity places available for anyone wanting to take on the challenge.

The organisation is the country’s oldest animal welfare charity and relies on public donations to carry out vital work protecting animals in need.

Any seasoned runners or those looking to get fit can gain a place in the run, which takes place between Newcastle and South Shields, to help raise money for the charity.

There is a £42 registration fee to run on its behalf and it has set a fundraising target of £350.

Any potential runners have until Thursday, June 30, to register with the RSPCA.

All of the money raised will go towards the RSPCA’s work in preventing cruelty to animals, including rescuing, rehabilitating and rehoming abandoned and mistreated pets, bringing those responsible for cruelty before the courts and campaigning for improvements in animal welfare.

Fundraising manager Katie Sutcliffe said: “We have four weeks to fill our places for this amazing half marathon which has a reputation for being one of the best in the world.

“There may be some animal-loving runners out there who didn’t get chosen in the Great North Run ballot back in February and we would love to hear from you.

“The half marathon sees first class athletes from around the world running alongside those who are doing a half marathon for the first time, as well as everyone in between. There is nothing quite like the atmosphere on the day.

“This is a great chance to be part of something special and to make a difference to animals in need.”

Those who run for the fund will receive an RSPCA training t-shirt; RSPCA running vest; Iron on vest letters, so cheerers can shout out their name; an invite to a post reception gathering at the charity village; cheering materials for your friends and family; running fundraising pack, which includes lots of ideas to maximise your sponsorship, including stickers, posters and collection boxes; running training guide; access to a Facebook group to talk to other RSPCA runners and support from an events team on hand to help with fundraising.

The RSPCA is also looking for cheerers to join RSPCA Team Animal and be part of our lively and supportive cheering team.

It needs help to cheer on its Team Animal runners and help them reach the finish line.
