AN internal auditor will face a judge over allegations that he swindled more than £180,000 from the personal accounts of dead care home residents who had no family.

Steven Mason, 36, faces two charges of committing fraud by abusing his position as group internal auditor at Four Seasons Health Care, which runs nursing homes across Hartlepool and East Durham.

He is charged with fraudulently obtaining £80,942.32 from September 24, 2010, to August 31, 2011, and £102,843.39 from September 30, 2011, to April 24, 2012.

He appeared at Teesside Magistrates’ Court, in Middlesbrough, yesterday, where the case was committed to be heard at Teesside Crown Court.

Mason, who did not enter a plea to the alleged offences will appear at the crown court for a plea and directions hearing on Thursday, June 20.

Mason, of Seaview, Easington Village, was granted unconditional bail until then.
