A UNIVERSITY celebrated the achievements of its journalism students at its first awards night.

The Hartlepool Mail was among the prize sponsors at the event with Rebecca Greener earning a fortnight’s works experience with the paper as part of her reward for winning the best news portfolio category.

She was also presented with a certificate by Mail reporter Dom Shaw, himself a graduate of the university’s multi-media journalism course, and assistant editor Gavin Ledwith.

The Mail has forged close links with the journalism department with staff often giving talks to students about their chosen career.

Mr Ledwith said: “We have always been impressed by the standard of students produced by Teesside University’s journalism department.

“Dom is one of its success stories and has won two prestigious national awards for his work since starting at the Mail.

“We are sure there are plenty of others like him coming up through the ranks.”

A host of local and national newspapers, magazines and websites also offered works experience as part of other prizes.

Professor Gerda Roper, the dean of the university’s school of arts and media, said: “It is a tribute to the calibre of our students and our courses here at Teesside that we have such prestigious media partners who are willing to give their time and expertise to give new young journalists that extra boost of work experience and placements which is so valuable when they are starting out in their careers.”
