POLICE are reminding people to keep their homes secure after a spate of sneak-in burglaries.
Officers say that over the past couple of days, someone has been trying door handles on housing estates and entering houses which were unlocked.
Items have been stolen, including money, computers, handbags and on one occasion a vehicle, which was found later.
Police say this has happened four times over the past two days at night time and early indications are that it is the same person involved.
Inspector Dave Coxon, of Peterlee Police, said: “With the crime rate going down, Peterlee is generally a very safe place, but opportunist thieves will take advantage of unlocked doors.
“People should make sure their front and back doors are locked every night.”
Residents are urged to contact police on 101 if they see anyone acting suspiciously in the manner described.
