BINGO-LOVERS could be top of the shop after breaking records to hand out more than £2m in the last six months alone.

Hartlepool’s Mecca Bingo paid out the huge sum in prizes between January and June this year to make it one of the most successful in the region for pay-outs.

The Hartlepool venue, at The Lanyard, off Marina Way, Hartlepool, is the third most successful for pay-outs in the North-East, North Yorkshire and the Humber areas, behind Hull and Stockton.

The £2m has been won over regular in-house main stage and cashline games and does not include winnings from the national games, which takes the total to £2,098,210.

A Grand Night Out events, which are held around once a month on Sundays, see around £10,200 worth of prize money given out.

The company has given away £17.1m across the region and £162m across the country so far this year.

Gavin Lee, general manager at Mecca Hartlepool, said: “To pay out £2m worth of prize money to our customers in just six months is fantastic.

“Bingo is more fun than ever. The chances of winning a sum of money that will give you a boost are huge.

“I think people new to the game always find it surprising how frequent the wins can actually be, whether in clubs or online.

“There’s always a fantastic atmosphere in the club when someone wins and other customers are genuinely happy for the winner.

“There’s a real sense of excitement and camaraderie.”

People can play one of two ways, either the traditional paper-based game or by using the new Mecca Max electronic tablet.

Mark Dadson, operations manager at the club, added: “Gone are the days of ‘legs 11’ where customers were playing for a packet of custard creams, Mecca is an exciting and dynamic place to come that’s relevant for today.

“With the Mecca Max, we are adding new technology to enhance customer experience.

“We are catering for everyone, we are keeping to our roots with the paper game yet we know people want to get to grips with technology.”
