EIGHT fire engines were sent to tackle a blaze at a community centre.
Fire crews from across County Durham were called to Thornley Community Centre, in Hartlepool Street, Thornley, just after 6pm on Sunday after reports of smoke billowing from the roof.
Initially crews from Peterlee and Wheatley Hill attended, but more were sent from Durham, Sedgefield, Seaham and two from Newton Aycliffe, then the aerial ladder platform from Darlington, as the extent of the blaze became known.
Four appliances remain at the scene late into the evening.
A County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue service spokeswoman said: “The fire was in the cellar and main hall.”
