Bookmakers are backing Sam Allardyce to get off to a winning start as Sunderland boss - but say he still faces a tall order to keep the Black Cats in the Premier League.

Betfred have shortened the odds on Sunderland getting off to a winning start under Big Sam against West Bromwich Albion at The Hawthorns next Saturday.

They are now 3/1 from 100/30 to record their first win of the Premier League season at the Hawthorns.

But despite that, Betfred still have Sunderland despite the managerial change 1/4 favourites to be relegated.

The Warrington-based bookie also said it suspended bets on Big Sam getting the job an hour before the announcement after several four-figure wagers in North East shops - even though the odds had shortened to 1/8.
