A FORMER European champion boxer was slapped with a fine and four points on his driving licence for a speeding offence.

Michael Hunter, 34, who is a former super bantamweight British and European champion, appeared at Hartlepool Magistrates’ Court yesterday.

Hunter, of Eskdale Road, was caught doing 43mph in a 30mph zone in Throston Grange Lane, in Hartlepool, on October 29 last year.

The court heard how Hunter identified himself as the driver, but couldn’t send his driving licence to the police because it was away with the DVLA.

By the time his licence was returned a summons had already been issued.

Neil Taylor, mitigating, said: “He co-operated fully, but he couldn’t send his license off because it was with the DVLA, that’s the situation.” Hunter pleaded guilty to speeding and was ordered to pay a £60 fine, £50 prosecution costs and a £20 surcharge and had his licence endorsed with four points.
