PEOPLE have a chance to remember their loved ones at a park cafe while raising money for good causes after bosses joined forces with Rotarians.

Maria Harrison, who runs the Place In The Park cafe in Ward Jackson Park, Hartlepool, has teamed up with Hartlepool Rotary Club to put in place a Christmas remembrance tree at the cafe.

People can make a donation, probably of £1, to place a bauble and a message to a lost loved one on the tree.

Any money raised will be collected by the rotary club and be distributed to various charities throughout next year, chosen by current club President Ted Jackson.

Maria said: “We have gone halves on the tree with Hartlepool Rotary Club to try to raise some money over Christmas with a remembrance tree.

“It is a massive tree in the middle of the cafe and we have had a great response so far.

“The rotary club will get all the proceeds to send to local charities.

“It’s all in a good cause, so it’s a win-win situation all round really.”

Maria said she saw a “gorgeous” Christmas tree earlier in the year but could not afford it.

But the rotary agreed to share the cost on the condition they could use it to raise funds.

Mr Jackson said: “We are very happy to have got together with the Place in the Park to provide the tree.

“There are so many good causes that we have a general fund for charities and money raised will help anyone who needs special assistance.”

The tree is just one element of a host of festivities going on at the cafe and park.

This Sunday, the park will host a sponsored Santa Fun Run and Christmas fair in aid of Hartlepool & District Hospice, with the run starting from the Place in the Park at 11am.
