A RUGBY player was airlifted to hospital after seriously injuring his back.
The 18-year-old sustained the injury while playing for Consett against West Hartlepool Bucks in the reserve fixture on Saturday afternoon.
Paramedics were alerted to the incident and the Great North Air Ambulance (GNAA) was called to West Hartlepool Rugby Club, in Catcote Road, at around 4pm.
The teenager, who was from Consett, was flown to the University Hospital of James Cook, in Middlesbrough, were he is being treated for spinal injuries.
A spokesman for the GNAA said: “The man was flown to hospital after sustaining spinal injuries in a tackle.
“His injuries were not life threatening.
“He had a smooth and fast journey to hospital which is important after suffering spinal injuries.”
