DEMOLITION work has started on a former library which is being flattened to make way for a housing development.

Bulldozers moved in on the building earlier this week and the clearance of the site is to be completed by the end of next week.

The developer’s identity is still confidential as contracts are yet to be exchanged.

A Hartlepool Borough Council spokesman said: “We are in the process of demolishing the building in preparation for the sale of the site, for which final negotiations are in process with the purchaser.”

Due to the council budget cuts the library, which served the community for 60 years, closed at the end of March last year to save the local authority £47,536 a year.

A council spokesman added: “The decision to close the library and sell the land was taken following unprecedented cuts in the level of Government grant which the council receives.

“The sale of the site for housing will raise much-needed funds for the council during this most severe of economic times.”
