A HARTLEPOOL firm is celebrating after achieving a first in industry.

Town-based insulation manufacturer Knauf Insulation has won a leading environmental rating for products manufactured at its facility in town.

The company has become the first manufacturer of extruded polystyrene in the UK to receive a certified ‘A’ rating from the specialist Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method Green Guide.

The A rating was for its for its range of insulation products called Polyfoam ECO which are all produced at its Hartlepool site, on the Hunter House Industrial Estate at Tofts Road East.

Plant general manager Stuart Bell said: “More and more people are looking to do their bit for the environment by making sure the products they use in their homes and businesses are environmentally friendly, so it’s up to manufacturers like us to provide assurances of sustainable performance.”

He added: “We are really pleased to have achieved this rating, which sets our Polyfoam ECO in an unrivalled position, as all other extruded polystyrene products currently available have a BRE Generic Green Guide rating of ‘E’.”

Mr Bell described the rating as “an extremely positive endorsement of our product” as the testing prodcedure was robust because it covered the manufacturing process as well as the product and the materials.

Knauf Insulation employs 5,000 people in more than 35 countries and more than 30 manufacturing sites worldwide. In the UK, the company employs around 500 people at its four manufacturing plants at Hartlepool, St Helens, Queensferry, and Cwmbran.

Knauf was founded in 1932 by the brothers Karl and Dr. Alfons N. Knauf. Fron its beginnings in gypsum processing along the Saar and Main rivers, Knauf has expanded to deliver products in fields such as building materials and systems, thermal insulation and sound insulation materials, limestone and lime products, chalk and cement related products, and plant engineering.

Its Hartlepool site is responsible for extruded polystyrene and is renowned as being one a respected names in insulation worldwide. It offers insulation in areas such as energy efficiency, fire resistance and acoustic performance .
