Five-star awards for catering firms

TWO firms based in the same centre have a five-star reason to celebrate after receiving an important accolade.

Both the Little Sweet Cake Shop and Delicious have been awarded five stars in the Tees Valley Food Hygiene Award Scheme.

Both are based in Hartlepool Enterprise Centre and underwent a full hygiene inspection looking at health, safety, cleanliness and management aspects.

Lisa Wells, the manager of Delicious which offers hot meals, sandwiches and refreshments, said: “It is the highest award you can get on the scheme and last year we got four stars.”

She said it was fantastic to receive the accolade and said it was important that customers know their food and refreshments were being prepared in a clean and safe environment.

Lisa has run the outlet on a full-time basis for the last three years and is supported by part-time staff member Cheryl Brand.

She said the bistro attracts customers from both within the centre as well as outside customers and added: “We would like to expand and promote outside catering a little more.”

Jill Nichol has had the Little Sweet Cake Shop since July last year.

It offers a service of baking and decorating celebration cakes and Jill said: “It is going really well and business is getting better all the time.”

Jill formerly worked in a hairdressing salon and in catering before deciding to branch out for herself.

She enrolled on an NVQ level 2 course in cake decorating and then decided to go into business.

Jill said: “I had worked for other people and wanted to do something creative for myself.”

She said the award does help because “people want to see that you have nice, clean premises”.
