NEW jobs are on the way as a new supermarket prepares to open its doors on a housing estate.
Iceland is opening a second store in Hartlepool, in Skerne Road, in the West View area of town.
It will bring 16 jobs, including safeguarding seven jobs of former staff of the Poundstretcher store, which formerly occupied the site having taken over from Netto and before that Kwik Save occupied the premises.
Staff have undergone two weeks of training and the supermarket will open on Tuesday, September 3.
The store, which will have free car parking, is in addition to the one Iceland already have in the town’s Middleton Grange Shopping Centre.
An Iceland spokeswoman said: “The Skerne Road supermarket will have a completely different feel of demographic to the one we have got in the town centre, adding more variety of shopping in that area.
“In the town centre, there is Asda, Morrisons and Tesco, but not an awful lot supermarket-wise in the West View area, so shoppers will have more choice and more value for money.
“There will be 16 members of staff in the store, seven of which are ex-Poundstretcher employees who we have taken on.”
The spokeswoman said the store will be slightly smaller than the town centre-based premises, as half of the site, off Winterbottom Avenue, will be taken up by another as yet unnamed store.
The supermarket will be open seven-days-a-week, from 8am to 9pm Monday to Saturday and from 11am to 5pm on Sundays.
Contractors are busy putting last-minute touches to the building, with new signage already visible, and new areas have been added, including for chiller cabinets.
