A HARTLEPOOL fabrication site has announced 250 new jobs for the town.
The news was announced on the same day that Iain Wright, Shadow Minister for Industry and MP for Hartlepool, visited the yard where the jobs will be created to handle work on the Cygnus gas development.
Mr Wright said: “We need to ensure that the skills, supply chain and industrial capability we have continue to make Britain a leading player in the world for this type of engineering and manufacturing. A long-term industrial strategy will help us achieve that.”
Heerema has been working on the Cygnus contract since 2012 and has already nearly completed a contract for a 1,640 tonne wellhead topsides structure.
But that’s just the start of the potential for the Cygnus development. It is the largest gas discovery for 25 years and at peak will produce enough gas to meet the needs of 1.5m UK homes. Eighty per cent of the project spend is being invested in the UK.
The Cygnus project will create 4,000 jobs in its supply chain alone and Heerema’s involvement has taken the workforce at the Hartlepool yard from 450 to 700.
Mr Wright added: “The Cygnus Alpha wellhead platform is a great example of British engineering and I welcome the extra 250 jobs that have been created here, bringing the total number to 700. The completion of this impressive platform marks an important milestone in the project.”
