Some 34,135 vehicles - the Prius hybrid, Prius plug-in and the Lexus CT200h - could have a small crack in some inflators in the air bags in the driver and passenger sides which may expand, causing the air bags to partially inflate.

Toyota said it did not know of any fatalities or injuries related to the latest recalls of 1.43 million vehicles globally.

The models are sold widely across Europe and out of the 141,000 vehicles affected across the continent, nearly a quarter are British.

Holland was the European country with the second largest number of cars being recalled (22,319), followed by France with 15,260.

Elsewhere, 743,000 vehicles in Japan, 495,000 in North America, 9,000 vehicles in China and 46,000 vehicles in other regions are being recalled.

All the vehicles affected were manufactured in two factories in Japan and produced between October 2008 and April 2012.

The latest recalls are separate from the mass recalls of Takata air bags, Toyota said.

Toyota will be releasing a statement to customers who might be affected, a spokesman said.
