THE number of people out of work in Hartlepool and claiming jobseekers allowance increased last month.
New figures released this morning show 3,937 people claimed the benefit in December last year compared to 3,897 the previous month.
It means that 6.8 per cent of people in Hartlepool claimed jobseekers allowance last month, significantly higher than the national and regional average.
In the Easington constituency, unemployment fell in December.
The figures show 2,587 people claimed the benefit last month compared to 2,648 in November.
There was also a drop in claimants in Sedgefield where 1,980 people were out of work in December, a slight fall from 2,002 in November.
But in the Stockton North constituency, which covers Billingham and Wolviston, there were 3,446 people out of work in December, an increase compared to the 3,393 claimants the previous month.
