WATCH: Q30 Infiniti production launched at Sunderland Nissan

The production of a new premium grade car has been launched in Sunderland.

The event, in honour of the Q30 Infiniti, marked a huge moment for the city's Nissan plant today.

It is the first time in more than 20 years that a new brand has been produced at a plant in the United Kingdom.

The first Q30 vehicles, also the brand's first manufactured in Europe. officially rolled off the assembly line at the plant today.

Trevor Mann, Chief Performance Officer of Nissan Motor Corporation, said: "Today we are beginning an exciting new chapter in the Infiniti story, and I can't think of a better place to start than here at Nissan's Sunderland plant.

"Over its 30 year history, Sunderland has grown into the UK'S largest automotive plant. It is renowned for delivering high quality, top-selling vehicles, and is regarded as a world-class production facility with a highly skilled and dedicated work force."

New facilities were built at the plant to cope with the work, and 300 new jobs were created in the city.

A total of £250 million was invested in the project.

Members of the media were today given a tour of the Infiniti body shop and the trim and chassis body shop. A first-look launch was also held, with members of the public and staff in attendance.
