A GHOULISH time was had by all when members of a social group descended on Whitby.

The Butterflies, which meets every Saturday at 11am at Springs Health Club at Hartlepool Marina, visited Whitby for its Spring Goth Weekend on Saturday.

Around 60 members travelled down to the North Yorkshire fishing port on two buses.

The buses set off from Springs at 10am on Saturday and arrived in Whitby just before lunch.

Group founder Barbara Scott said: “It was a really lovely day. It rained a little bit on the way down, but wherever Butterflies are, the sun always comes out.

“Some of us hadn’t heard of the Gothic Weekend until I started Butterflies.

“We went for the day a couple of years ago and we couldn’t wait to go back.

“It’s going to be a regular occurrence now, it’s just a good day out.”

She said a few members donned traditional Gothic costume to take part in the event.

Barbara added that some of the group came home around 6pm and others stayed on until about 9pm to enjoy the area’s pubs.

Barbara said the group is planning a trip to Eden Camp, a Second World War modern history museum in North Yorkshire.

She added: “A lot of the older people in the group haven’t been before.

“When the weather improves, we hope to have some days out in places like Whitley Bay and Tynemouth.”

She said the group is now 100-strong and is going from strength to strength.

As well as having trips out and meeting every Saturday, Butterflies also has monthly functions.

The next one will take place from 7.30pm on May 10 at Springs, with music from local singer Bernie. Marty Scott will also provide entertainment during a similar event on May 31. Tickets cost £5 from Barbara on 07896 502516.
