A GROUP of calendar girls struck a series of wacky poses in an effort to brighten people’s day during 2013.

Fundraisers at Warren Road Day Centre in Hartlepool for adults with learning disabilities have created the unusual calendar.

They came up with the idea of a quirky year-planner to help raise money for extra activities at the centre.

Staff and volunteers of the centre, run by Hartlepool Borough Council, are featured in the Sunflower Secrets 2013 calendar doing ordinary tasks in some very unusual places around the town.

They include ironing in a field of cows, using a sewing machine on the pitch at Hartlepool United’s Victoria Park and having a picnic in a boxing ring.

All the photographs were taken by Hartlepool photographer Chris Armstrong.

Pat Sprintall, a community worker at the centre and a member of the Friends of the Sunflower Lounge organising committee, is pictured on the front cover ironing in a barn.

She said: “There have been a lot of people creating their own calendars in recent years, including the famous Calendar Girls!

“We wanted to do one which was very tongue in cheek and we had a lot of fun doing the photoshoots in some strange places.

“We’d like to thank everyone who has helped to make our very first calendar a reality.

“It should brighten the day for people in the year ahead.”

The Friends of the Sunflower Lounge organise numerous fundraising projects to support the centre’s activities.

Last year, the centre welcomed £38,000 of improvements which saw the creation of a sensory garden and major revamps to its light and sound room and spa pool.

The calendar costs £6.50 and is available from Warren Road Day Centre by calling (01429) 264661.
