People of all ages in Hartlepool and East Durham are being urged to “get their wig on” and help boost the funds of a children’s cancer charity.

CLIC Sargent will be hosting its annual Wig Wednesday fundraiser on May 25.

The event gets people to think about young people and cancer.

Organisers of the event, which was launched five years ago, hope this year will be as successful as the last.

Already, 34 schools and companies in the North East have signed up to take part in the annual event.

Dee Tyler, fundraising manager for the region, said: “This year, as well as people being sponsored to wear wigs themselves, we are also encouraging people to nominate someone to wear a wig – it could be a boss, work colleague or headteacher.

“It is such a great event, but it also gets people thinking about what children and young people are going through when they have been diagnosed with cancer.

“And for those who have someone who has been diagnosed with cancer, it is also a sign of solidarity.”

Money raised through sponsorship helps the charity to support families of youngsters diagnosed with cancer.

Last year, the CLIC Sargent team cared for 215 new or relapsed young cancer patients from the North East and Cumbria.

The charity also distributed support grants to these families totalling more than £52,000.

The team is based across the RVI and Freeman Hospitals in Newcastle and consists of five social workers, a social work assistant, an administrator and a team leader who provide practical, financial and emotional support to help children and young people cope with cancer and get the most out of life.

Dee added: “The money raised by our ‘hair-os’ will fund our amazing team of CLIC Sargent nurses, social workers and other services which all help children, young people and their families through the hardest of times.”
