KEEN walkers have given a massive boost to an appeal to help a little boy.
The Callum’s Dream campaign has had an extra £2,015 added to it thanks to keen 42 walkers who trekked seven miles in baking sun.
Thanks to their efforts, it means the appeal total now stands at more than £13,000.
The appeal, run by the Hartlepool Mail in conjunction with town charity Epilepsy Outlook, was set up to support two-year-old Callum who suffers from conditions including epilepsy, reflux problems, dystonia, hypertonia and problems with swallowing.
We started the project in July in a bid to get Callum the sensory room he needs. We hoped to raise £5,000 but the appeal total has almost tripled that after just three months of campaigning.
At the moment, Callum is in hospital at the Newcastle Royal Victoria Infirmary with his parents Luke Smith, 23, and Zoe Neesam, 21, by his bedside.
He has now spent around two weeks in intensive care.
Back home in Hartlepool, the campaign to give him the very best support goes on. The sponsored walk in September was organised by his caring granddad Michael Smith, 50.
He and 41 other walkers headed from the Headland to Seaton Carew in temperatures which topped 20 degrees.
Michael, a Stagecoach bus company engineer, said: “We got a load of support and the whole thing went like a dream. We’re hoping that there might even be a bit more money coming in.”
In his short life, Callum has been in hospital almost as often as at home in Hartlepool.
We are continuing the appeal as Callum’s needs are ongoing.
