Big plans for Titan House

A BUILDING that has stood derelict for nearly 20 years could be brought back into use.

Developers want to turn Titan House, on the corner of Park Road and York Road, into luxury apartments and studios. Proposals by new owner Parbat Varsani for the prominent six-storey office block include a 1.9million conversion of the building into 10 two-bedroom apartments, nine one-bedroom apartments and 30 studios.

Titan House, a former social services building once owned by Cleveland County Council, is one of five key buildings earmarked by Hartlepool's New Deal for Communities (NDC) as part of an overall strategy to bring empty buildings back into use.

The building has also appeared in the Mail's Spot the Grots campaign and is on Hartlepool Mayor Stuart Drummond's hit list of buildings needing action.

Mr Varsani has been working with NDC and Hartlepool Borough Council to discuss his plans and determine the best options for the area.

He is no stranger to helping to regenerate buildings in the town and has completed work on Tower Chambers in Tower Street, and the Royal Vaults in Church Street.

Mr Varsani said: "We will be putting a significant amount of investment into the Titan House project which will improve the whole street scene and redevelop a building which is so prominently positioned in the town centre.

"We want to put Titan House back on the map, and put life into a building that has caused so many problems over the years.

"It is going to be a challenge to rectify some of the buildings current internal problems, but a challenge which the team and I relish."

Hartlepool Mayor Stuart Drummond said: "I'm delighted we can finally cross another derelict building off the list.

"It makes a huge difference to an area when an empty building like Titan House can be brought back into use and I'm pleased that Mr Varsani has had the ambition to invest."

Malcolm Walker, from NDC, said: "Titan House has a new owner who shares our vision for a regenerated and revived town centre.

"We have made it a priority to secure the future use of a number of derelict and empty buildings that blight the NDC area.

"As part of this strategy, work is ongoing on an exciting redevelopment project for the Co-op Building and the demolition of the rundown Barlows Building, in Park Road, which will make way for an exciting new health facility.

"We will continue to work with local agencies, residents, and private investors to find ways to put life back into the Odeon building, in York Road, and the Crown Buildings on Surtees Street."
