A PERSONAL trainer has joined the Hartlepool Mail battle to get town people to shape up in Olympic year.

Susan McKenna, 37, became the latest backer for our Race For Fitness challenge.

And she’s willing to give a free taster session to people who sign up for the campaign.

The mum-of-three from the Clavering area told us: “There is nothing better than seeing people go from being out of shape to being fit and healthy. That is real job satisfaction for me.”

Susan is willing to offer a free consultation and free personal training session or a free session at one of her boxing circuit classes for anyone who first signs up for Race For Fitness.

Our campaign aims to get at least 2,012 people in Hartlepool and east Durham to spend this year improving their health - and the numbers are growing fast.

You could quit smoking or drinking, take up exercise, or go on a diet.

You could do a sponsored cycle, run, walk or swim.

We are also encouraging groups, companies and organisations to back the project which runs between now and the moment the Olympic flame is lit on July 27.

The support so far has been impressive and our backers already include;

l The chairman of the London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games, Lord Sebastian Coe;

l Former Olympian Fatima Whitbread;

l And Tony Aikenhead, project director of the London 2012 Olympic Stadium.

Susan was formerly a lecturer at Newcastle College until she was made redundant in July last year.

She used the change in circumstances to take the qualifications she already had in sport to a higher level.

“I used to train friends as a personal trainer, but never got paid for it. Since November last year, I have been running classes and hopefully it can eventually become a business,” said the mum to Owen, aged nine, Cara, aged four, and one-year-old Niall.

Susan, who is married to Andrew McKenna, 39, who owns and runs Expert Cables in Hartlepool, is a keen runner herself and added: “I am keen to back Race For Fitness. It’s a great idea.”

Anyone who signs for Race For Fitness can also take up Susan’s offer of support.

Her boxing circuit classes are held at The Peoples Centre from 10am to 11am on Mondays, at the Rossmere Centre from 10am to 11am on Tuesdays, and 6pm to 7pm on Thursdays, and at St Hild’s School on Mondays between 6.30pm and 7.30pm.
