A CAMPAIGN which has amassed more than £14,000 for a battling town youngster has just missed out on a national award.
But the loving mum of brave Callum Smith has thanked all of those who showed their support for her brave son once again by voting for the campaign.
The Mail’s Callum’s Dream was nominated as one of the best 30 editorial campaigns in the UK as part of Local Newspaper Week.
Under the slogan Making a Difference, the shortlist showcased the finest editorial campaigns which have all helped to make a difference in the local community.
That’s exactly what Callum’s Dream has done thanks to the amazing support of our generous readers. And residents have showed their support by voting online all week for Callum’s Dream. Unfortunately the campaign just missed out to fellow Johnston Press title the Yorkshire Post which took the crown.
But Callum’s caring mum, Zoe Neesam, 21, said the fact the campaign was nominated helped to raise even more awareness of the battles her son faces on a daily basis. The courageous two-year-old takes 15 types of medication three times a day for a string of serious conditions including epilepsy, dystonia and hypertonia and needs to be fed through a tube in his stomach.
“Thanks to the campaign being nominated, even more people are now aware of what Callum is going through,” said Zoe, who lives with Callum and her partner Luke Smith, 23, in Laird Road, in the town.
“We are so grateful to everyone who took the time to vote, the support we have had from day one has been incredible.”
Callum was taken to hospital on Thursday night as a precautionary measure after suffering breathing problems. Zoe said the youngster was in a stable condition but medics are still unaware of what caused the problem.
All of the money raised since the Mail launched the campaign in partnership with Epilepsy Outlook goes towards funding specialist equipment for Callum and constant trips to and from hospital. The money has so far funded a state-of-the art specialist sensory room and Zoe and Luke are hoping to take the youngster to Disneyland in the future.
