RECRUITMENT agency bosses have issued words of wisdom to jobseekers featured in a Hartlepool Mail campaign to get people into work.
Hartlepool-based Workwise Personnel, which is also a training and development provider, have got on board with our Work in Progress initiative, which aims to highlight the plight of jobseekers in the town.
Working for the Scarborough Street-based company, staff have seen first-hand the plight of the unemployed, describing how hundreds of applicants are applying for 20 to 30 jobs in various sectors.
They added that with the economic downturn, the 12-year-old company’s workload has increased, with more and more people using their services. As a result, Workwise have had to take on five more full-time staff in the last six months.
But managing director Dave Williams told all jobseekers: “Don’t give up.
“If you are registered with an agency, although we might not be ringing you with jobs every day, if you are not registered we can’t ring you.”
Mr Williams said former printer Graham Lyth, 50, and Michael Driver, who are the faces of our campaign, are already on the books of the company.
The Mail reported on Thursday that Michael, 20, who left Hartlepool College of Further Education with an NVQ Level 1 in plumbing, had been offered a place on a training course with a view to landing a sales job.
The third jobseeker featured in our campaign, Brian Kitching, 32, a fabricator and fitter who was made redundant last July, is not signed up to Workwise Personnel, but staff still had helpful advise for him.
Workwise “screens” people by assessing their credentials, using professional knowledge of each industry, before putting them forward for interviews with potential employers.
Mr Williams said if it is felt candidates are unsuitable for interviews, staff will look for other ways of helping them, such as offering training courses or a different type of employment.
He added: “Our clients come to us because they know we do a good, professional job.
“It cuts their recruitment time down an awful lot.
“The problem is, the jobs that are out there, clients are looking for experienced people.
“Ten years ago, you wouldn’t have a bricklayer registering with agencies.
“But now we could have 300 registered with us for employment, simply because of the downturn.”
Teresa Perry, office manager for the Hartlepool branch of Workwise, said customer service and administration are the main sectors that people are applying for.
She added that a host of new free training courses are offered, including plastering, carpentry and joinery and fitted interiors with plumbing.
Operations manager Nikki Williams said: “If anybody is unemployed and can’t find a job, put your CV into Workwise.
“We can offer various retraining and recruitment courses that may offer you a stepping stone into the career you are looking for.”
