Training offer for Michael

Michael Driver

A YOUNG jobseeker has been given a ray of hope after being put on a waiting list to attend a training course for a sales job.

And if Michael Driver successfully completes the six-week course, there could be a job at the end of the scheme for the 20-year-old Hartlepool lad.

Michael is one of the faces of the Hartlepool Mail’s Work in Progress campaign, which aims to help local people off the dole queue.

The Mail told yesterday how fresh from appearing in the paper on Monday, the former Manor College of Technology student received a phone call from Workwise Personnel, offering him an interview.

Michael readily agreed to Tuesday’s interview, for the position of an outgoing salesman, and went along to Workwise’s Scarborough Street-based offices.

He said as he had little work experience, he did not have an actual interview for the role with an unnamed company, but was instead offered a place on a training academy course with a view to eventually getting the salesman’s job.

Michael, from Lanark Road, in the Owton Manor area, said: “It went ok. They have signed me up for a work academy scheme for a few weeks. I will go with the company for two days and do six weeks of training and it could lead to a job.

“It’s looking pretty good.”

Michael, who left Hartlepool College of Further Education with an NVQ Level 1 in plumbing 18 months ago but has not been able to find work despite applying for around 200 jobs, said other job opportunities had been flagged up to him since he appeared in the Mail on Monday.

He said his postman told him there were vacancies at the town’s Royal Mail offices and he said another well-wisher informed him about a job at a service station in Wynyard Road.

Michael said he is keen to apply for the vacancies.

A spokeswoman for Workwise Personnel confirmed Michael has been lined up for a place on the training course when it becomes available.
