A TRENDSETTING GP surgery is bidding for success after being nominated for an award.

The Headland Medical Practice is in the running for a Best of Health award for its multi-tiered system of making sure patients get the best service possible.

A grateful member of the public put forward the team, based at Groves Street, Hartlepool, for “always being there to visit their patients when they are unwell and meet up with the district nurses when necessary”.

The nominee added; “They have a walk-in policy so patients get to see a GP the same day without having to make an appointment.”

The news brought delight to Dr Rabindra Thakur from the practice who said: “We are really proud. We are not seeking fame. We are just trying to provide a service as best we can.”

Fellow doctor Edvige Uccelli said part of the success story was because the surgery operated a system where people can come in without an appointment”.

Dr Thakur said the “open- access” system worked because it meant there was “no hassle.”

It also worked in tandem with a weekend system where people who work during the week can come in on an appointment.

And to add to the whole system, the surgery also operates an extended hours surgery “so that people who can not come in at all because of their working hours can come on an evening and come after 6.30pm”.

“We are quite involved in multi-disciple team working,” said Dr Thakur. “It is well co-ordinated care of the person.”

Services offered at the centre include minor surgery and the team also includes three nurses, a health care assistant, a reception manager and seven receptionists.
