Trust’s boost for apprentices

DOZENS of young people are in line for a boost thanks to a regeneration trust.

The Coalfields Regeneration Trust’s National Apprenticeship Programme is providing 255 young people in England’s coalfields with apprenticeship and employment opportunities.

Durham County Council is the lead authority in this area and a total of 35 apprenticeships will be created with £35,000 worth of investment.

The figure includes one apprenticeship in Hartlepool and three in Billingham and dozens more across County Durham.

The apprenticeships will be available in a wide variety of industries and occupations.

Each apprenticeship will run for a minimum of 12 months and young people will start taking up the opportunities over the next three months.

The latest figures show there was a rise of 700 Jobseeker’s Allowance claimants in the four constituency areas covered by the Hartlepool Mail in the last month.

Gary Ellis, trust chief executive, said: “Former coalfield communities have been badly hit by the economic downturn and this has compounded the problems already experienced by young people.

“This programme is a direct response to help young people into work and create a strong platform for their future aspirations.”
