A HARTLEPOOL canoeist has died after getting into difficulties on a river.
Andrew Weatherill, 33, had to be winched out of his canoe on the River Tyne after getting into trouble when his boat became trapped.
Emergency services including police, ambulance, Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service, the Great North Air Ambulance and a helicopter from RAF Boulmer all attended the incident, which happened just off the A695 in the weir by the Riding Mill pump station near Hexham, at around 2.25pm on Saturday.
Mr Weatherill was airlifted from the scene to Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary.
He was later pronounced dead.
