A RECKLESS motorist left behind a trail of destruction after smashing into a car and forcing it into a garden.

The collision pushed a Toyota Carina parked in Catcote Road, Hartlepool, into a fence and across the garden, but stopped short of the house.

Police said the householder had gone outside after hearing a bang in the early hours, but did not realise the damage had been caused until she got up the next morning and saw the car and the state of the garden in daylight.

Officers investigating the incident believe the car which hit the Toyota would have been left with substantial front-end damage and are appealing for help to track down the driver.

The crash happened between 3am and 3.40am on Friday.
