CHARITY champion Stephen Picton is drumming up more support for his charity single – with the helping hand of celebrities.

Stephen, 40, who raised £50,000 for good causes before his 40th birthday, recorded a single to raise awareness of bowel cancer that has caught the eye of singers Pete Burns and Boy George, as well as comedian Freddie Starr.

His version of Thom Pace’s hit Maybe, which is the theme tune from the Life and Times of Grizzly Adams, proved a huge success and has racked up more than 4,000 YouTube views.

But the madcap cabbie does not want to rest on what he has already achieved and is doing his best to “get the video out there”.

To his delight he was helped in his bid by celebrities who posted the link to the video on social networking site Twitter.

Singers Pete Burns and Boy George have both posted the link to their hundreds of thousands of followers as has comedian Freddie Starr.

“It’s fantastic,” said Stephen, 40, a dad-of-four who lives in the Blakelock Road area of Hartlepool with wife Sandy.

“I have been posting it to as many people as possible just in the hope that it helps to raise awareness and to put the video out there.

“Facebook has been brilliant for me, but Twitter has given me another avenue to go down.”

Stephen said he is now dreaming of the song being published so money can be raised for charity Support Your Bowel.

He added: “That would just be unbelievable.

“The support and comments I have had have been brilliant but to get the song published would cap it all off and raise money for the charity.”
