PEOPLE are being urged to put old furniture and other items to good use.
County Durham Furniture Forum, which is made up of six charities across County Durham, takes good quality, unwanted items, including still usable furniture, electrical goods and bric-a-brac, and makes them available to others at a low cost.
The forum, which includes the Horden-based East Durham Partnership and the Haswell Mencap Furniture Enterprise, also reduces waste and provides a wide range of training and volunteering opportunities to local people.
Ruth Smith, from strategic waste management at Durham County Council, said: “We’re always looking for new ways to protect the environment and save money, and County Durham Furniture Forum is perfect for that. We really want to encourage people to recycle their household items, rather than just throwing them away.”
Last year more than 500 tonnes of furniture was re-used by the members of the forum, a figure that it is hoping to beat this year.
